Пауль (paulney) wrote in cityscapes,

Venice, California (a suburb of Los Angeles).

This used to be one of the last refuges for hippies and bohema. Slightly dilapidated houses, canals overgrown with greenery and a general feel of cheap and worry free living. (At least that's what the tour book says). Now the land has jumped up in value, and hippies are pushed out by uppies who tear down the barracks and erect stately mansions. I have to admit, they do have a taste in architecture. Locals complain though, that the spirit of the community is gone.
